Number of deportations ordered by the Immigration
Courts in the United States from 1998 to 2012
The United States government uses different procedures to deport / remove persons that are not
authorized to be present in the country. Depending on the individual circumstances of the person
and on the claims raised, the government may be authorized to remove the individual without filing
a deportation case with the Immigration Court. However, in some situations, immigration law
requires that a deportation case be filed with the Immigration Court before the person may be
deported. Below are the U.S. Deportation Statistics related to those types of deportation cases
for which a filing with the Immigration Court was required and which show the number of persons
ordered deported by the Immigration Courts from 1998 to 2012, according to TRAC.
Naturally, there is a lag between the time that a deportation case is filed and the time a case is
scheduled and completed. Furthermore, under certain circumstances, a person may qualify for and
may be granted relief from deportation after the deportation case is filed. Therefore, the number of
persons ordered deported by the Immigration Courts each year differs from the number of
deportation cases filed with the Immigration Courts each year. And both of these numbers differ
from the total number of deportations yearly because, as indicated previously, these numbers do
not include the number of deportation cases for which the government is not required to file a
deportation case with the Immigration Courts before effectuating a removal.
