Louis and Mary Ann Thursby were the first known permanent settlers in the Orange City
area. In the 1850's, the Thursby's moved to the Blue Springs / Orange City area.
Some years later, Dr. Seth French and a group of settlers from Wisconsin came to the Orange City area area and established a settlement. Founded in 1874, Orange City was originally known as the "Wisconsin Settlement." By the way, Dr. French later became Florida's first Commissioner of Immigration.
It was not long before the Orange City area settlement became well established; in 1876 some of local women began what would become the Orange City Library, in 1877 the Orange City Methodist Church was organized, and by 1878 the first public school in Volusia County was founded in Orange City.
Shortly thereafter, Orange City was named for the thousands of acres of orange groves planted in and around the city. In 1882, Orange City was incorporated.
