Lake Eustis and the city of Eustis were both named in honor of General Abraham Eustis, a
career military man and lawyer who served in a number of wars. Lake Eustis was named
first, followed by the city of Eustis.
Originally, Lake Eustis and Lake Harris were thought to be one lake. So,the "one" lake was named Lake Eustis in 1823. But around 1850, a resident by the name of Harris pointed out to surveyors that there were actually two lakes. Harris who lived on one of the lakes claimed that the other lake was Lake Eustis. Thereafter, the lake to the southwest became known as Lake Harris and the lake to the northeast became known as Lake Eustis.
The name of the city of Eustis also has changed. Originally, Eustis was known as the Highlands. Then, in 1877, the area was named Pendryville after the postmaster, A.S. Pendry, who ran the post office out of the lobby of his hotel. Three years later, the name was changed to Lake Eustis. And, another three years later. in 1883, the "lake" in Lake Eustis was dropped and the area was incorporated and became known simply as Eustis.
